HIS 108 - HIS 108 History of the United States
This is a dual credit course for High School students offered by the Jefferson County Public School’s eSchool program in conjunction with Kentucky Community and Technical College System (KTCTS). The course is self contained on-line; all you need is a computer and some time.
This course begins in the pre-Columbian time period. The American continents before arrival of Columbus and the Spanish was much different than it is today. Any real history of the United States should include an account of human life here before European settlement. The encounters between the native cultures and the Europeans comprise much of the history during the Colonial era as well as the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. I attempt to make the course as inclusive as possible as far as historical perspectives are concerned. Racial, ethnic, social, and gender oriented histories are all chapters in the full story of the nation. Ignoring or glossing over any of them would not portray an accurate view of life during the various time periods covered.
This course contains much information over a several hundred year long time-frame. We do not expect you to memorize each individual detail of every lesson. You will be tested on knowledge that is more on a conceptual level. This means looking at the bigger picture of the significant events of the history of the United States. Having a firm background in history helps a person understand the society of today, and the forces at work that are causing changes during one’s lifetime.
